Back After A Nice Break…
Hello folks, I’m back after a nice break with a quick comment from our favorite curly tie engineer:
I needed a break from various things, but I should be back and blogging soon. Conference season is starting up. BI2013 was going to be first on my list, then SAPPHIRE. I had to back out of BI2013, and the jury is still out as to whether I’ll make it to SAPPHIRE/ASUG Annual Conference just yet.
I have finally started to do some serious work using the Information Design Tool, and my first blog post related to work flow differences between IDT and Universe Designer should be ready to come out shortly.
Finally, I have added a new permanent page to my side menu titled, “Donating To Dagira.” Please check it out and see if it’s something you would be willing to support, thanks!
I am way behind on approving comments. 😳 I will be working through those this week.
Thank God you’re still alive 🙂
I’m looking forward to hear your opinion about IDT. I’ve given it some attention myself and I must say it’s less efficient than the good old UDT but the interface has it charms also.
I do not understand yet how owners/qualifiers/connections should be treated (data federator ?) if you promote the unx from let’s say DEV to QA or to PROD if the qualifiers are different between these environments. The list of values and prompts are an interesting subject and offer new possibilities.
Also : is IDT the way to go or is it better to stick with the UDT in case there is no direct benefit from the new functionalities which IDT offers. Is UDT meant as a transition or is it there to stay for 5 years or more ?
Ton, let me address your questions in a following blog post. Something that will occur before two months are up. 😉
It’s good to see you back, Dave!
Hi Dave! First, I just want to acknowledge how helpful I find your blog! I am a finance person that dabbles in the wonderful world of IT. I have used Business Objects from the front end for almost 5 years. Within the last 2 years I joined a company that had just gotten Business Objects as an add-in from another SAP purchase, but had no in house expertise on the application. Before I knew it, I was taking the charge on the design, implementation and user training/adoption. Your website has helped me to bridge the gap with our IT team to dive into some of the more technical details. So much thanks!! But on to the real reason I am writting. As a I mentioned above, I have a background in finance and know the front-end of Business Objects very well. I have recently been put in a full-time role dedicated to the expansion of our current Business Objects data. So my real question is, is there a real future in Business Objects for someone like me who knows the front-end without being extremely technical? I would appreciate any advice or thoughts you may have on the subject! Keep up the great work!
Charlene, I believe that you can make a career coming from either direction. I started as a DBA a few years ago and worked my way into reporting and ultimately universe design and architecture. At the same time I have seen plenty of folks that start from the business side and end up doing more and more on the technical side. Keep in mind that business knowledge will never go out of style but tools may change!
